LCpl S. Moloney, a British Army Sniper within the Household Cav, was convinced he was about to die after a round hit him in the throat during a contact in Afghanistan 2013.

LCpl Moloney was part of a 12 man multiple flown into a Taliban stronghold in Helmand to find, fix and strike insurgents.
The sniper and a machine gunner positioned themselves on the roof of a building to provide overwatch.

However an enemy sharpshooter picked him out and shot him through the neck.
The near-fatal blow knocked LCpl Moloney off the sloping roof. He plunged 8ft towards the ground, luckily a local goat broke his fall.

The round entered the left side of his neck, missing his trachea and main artery, exiting through the right side.
Blood was pouring out but after five minutes of treatment the LCpl Molonry was back in the fight.

He said he spent minutes preparing for death until the medic stemmed the bleeding and stabilised him.

Minutes later he was back on his feet and engaging with the Taliban in searing heat, pinning down the enemy sharpshooter and helping to save his colleagues.

His actions lead to his award of the “CGC” -
The Conspicuous Gallantry Cross, it is the second highest award for gallantry in battle, with only the Victoria Cross ranking higher.
